Monte Sereno's Civic Calendar and El Sereno Trails

The gate at the end of Sheldon Road doesn't announce itself. No trailhead kiosk, no coffee cart, no sign pointing back toward a downtown you could return to afterward. You park where the pavement runs out, above the rooftops, and start climbing into El Sereno Open Space Preserve. That's the whole ritual. Monte Sereno has few places to shop or dine, so the preserve offers a different kind of outing.

That's not an accident of geography. It's zoning. Monte Sereno's fewer than 3,500 residents live almost entirely in single-family housing, and the city has no commercial zones whatsoever. The city calendar is one way residents come together.

The Civic Calendar

Two events on the city's August calendar offer opportunities for residents to gather:

Earlier this month, on August 4, the city and the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department hosted a Coffee with a Cop evening from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Town Plaza Park, a few minutes over the line in downtown Los Gatos. It also illustrates how the two communities share infrastructure, including a police department.

Next up is Picnic in the Park, a city-hosted barbecue for residents on Sunday, August 23, running 11:30 am to 2:00 pm with lunch served between noon and 1:30. It's held at a Santa Clara County park, where the county's standard $6 per-vehicle entrance fee applies.

There's a third civic thread running underneath both: the city's Citizen of the Year nomination window closed July 24, and the council reviewed applications and selected the honoree at its August 4 meeting, with the recognition happening at the summer picnic. That gives the picnic a civic role as well as a social one.

Exploring El Sereno Open Space Preserve

El Sereno Open Space Preserve is one of Monte Sereno's nearby outdoor destinations. It sits on the peak and slopes above the city, 1,614 acres of chaparral and oak managed by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, and it was acquired back in 1975, giving Midpen an early foothold to protect land in the Los Gatos and Monte Sereno hills before development could reach it.

Seven miles of trail run through it, and the way you access them says a lot about how the preserve is meant to be used. The longest route, Aquinas Trail, starts at the end of Sheldon Road above town and climbs from just over 1,000 feet to nearly 2,600 feet over about 3.5 miles, with views opening up toward Lexington Reservoir, Sierra Azul, and St. Joseph's Hill. A separate stretch of the Bay Area Ridge Trail through the preserve, dedicated in 2021, adds another 3.8 miles one way with no shuttle option, so you're committing to a there-and-back hike whichever direction you start from.

Parking is limited. Montevina Road, three miles west of Highway 17, has roadside space for exactly two cars. The Overlook trailhead, which feeds the shorter 2.6-mile out-and-back Overlook Trail, requires a no-fee permit and offers six spaces total. There's no walk-up option and no overflow lot.

How Dog Access Was Added to the Preserve

When Midpen ran an 18-month public visioning process starting in 2012, neighbors near the preserve specifically asked for expanded dog access as a priority. The project went onto the Five-Year Measure AA Project Prioritization List in 2014, and only after further public meetings and an environmental review did the board vote to open the preserve to on-leash dog access in 2017.

The policy applies to a handful of existing trails.

Planning a Visit to El Sereno

Planning ahead can help you make the most of the trails. If you want the Aquinas Trail's ridge views, plan for Sheldon Road and a real climb, not a lunchtime stroll. If you want the shorter Overlook Trail, apply for your parking permit before you show up. Montevina Road has space for two cars, so parking there is limited.
